Appetite Suppressants

Most of the current weight-loss drugs approved by the FDA are appe- tite suppressants. Appetite suppressants aid weight loss in one of three ways. One approach is to reduce appetite by blocking the part of the brain that makes you crave food.
The second way is to stimu- late the part of the brain that makes you feel full to the point of being satisfied, also known as being satiated. A third approach is to slow down stomach emptying, causing a person to feel more full with less food. The appetite can be suppressed by altering brain chemistry, such as by increasing levels of serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical that creates a feeling of satisfaction in the body.
